TDIH: The 1959 Yellowstone earthquake and "the dam that held"

Aug 17, 2016 |
Fifty-seven years ago on this date (August 17), a powerful earthquake struck southwestern Montana west of Yellowstone National Park. The quake measured 7.5 on the Richter scale and caused a massive landslide a few miles downstream from our dam at Hebgen Lake. The quake forever changed the area's landscape and the people who were affected by it. The quake and it's aftermath is well known, but the role of "the dam that held" may not be. Here's a history of the facility that celebrated its first century of operation in 2015.
