Total rebuild

The Missoula City Substation #1 is a key infrastructure facility located in downtown Missoula, adjacent to Caras Park. The substation is planned for a total rebuild in 2022. The need for the rebuild is to provide improved reliability and increased capacity necessary to serve the growing areas of downtown and the university district into the future.

This substation has been in continuous service since the 1920s.

Project timeline:

  • April 2022 - Install portable substation facilities that will be used while the Missoula City Substation is being rebuilt.
  • May 2022 - Construction begins on Missoula City Substation.
  • End of 2022 - Construction is completed.
  • Early 2023 - Final energization, clean up and reclamation work.

Temporary disruptions during rebuild

Temporary disruptions during rebuild

The rebuild not only includes substation upgrades, but also new transmission poles and realignment of transmission lines, underground distribution, and a new perimeter security wall. In addition, there will be a host of temporary use areas needed during this rebuild project. These areas include laydown yards, temporary easements, and placement of portable substations in key areas.

This is a very complex and challenging project both technically and publicly. The rebuild effort importantly has taken into consideration reducing and improving Caras park impacts and aesthetic improvements coincident with downtown Missoula improvements.
