Charging stations

South Dakota
We’re working with the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Volkswagen Mitigation Trust Fund to install electric vehicle charging stations in Mitchell and Chamberlain, with plans to install additional charging stations across our service territory.

We’re working to install electric vehicle charging stations along the I-90 and I-15 corridors as well as Highway 93 in Montana.

NorthWestern Energy is adding electric vehicles to its fleet. Investing is electric technologies will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will also reduce fuel consumption and maintenance costs. NorthWestern Energy will:

  • replace 30% of our production light-duty class vehicles (cars through half-ton trucks) with electric alternatives by 2030. This will include replacing approximately 100 vehicles with battery electric vehicles and plug-in electric hybrids.
  • make investment in system-wide electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
  • replace a significant number of vehicles, as they reach the end of their lives, with electric alternatives.

By 2030, we are committed to replacing:

  • 20% of new medium/heavy duty vehicles
  • 30% of new bucket trucks
  • 100% of new forklifts with electric alternatives.

This will be achieved by investing in idle mitigation, electric power takeoff (e-PTO), and electric forklift systems. Investment will begin in 2021 and ramp up to goal levels by 2030. These goals depend on the commercial availability of vehicles in each class.

NorthWestern Energy has a combined fleet of more than 1,200 vehicles.
