NorthWestern Energy to Replace Transmission Line Structures Northeast of Helena; Possible Impact on Hunting in Area

Nov 03, 2017

Butte, Mont. – Nov. 3, 2017 – NorthWestern Energy will be replacing 15 electric transmission structures in the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest, specifically in the Beaver Creek and Nelson areas northeast of Helena.

The work, which is necessary to replace structurally deficient structures or those that don’t meet line-to-ground clearance requirements, will take place seven days a week, beginning Nov. 4, 2017.  NorthWestern is required by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) to replace these structures before the end of 2017.

Due to the rugged terrain, structures in the Beaver Creek area will need to be replaced using helicopters to transport the equipment and assist in setting the poles. The remaining structures will be replaced using traditional methods of construction, as vehicles will be able to access the sites.

NorthWestern Energy recognizes the possible impact the construction activity may have in this area, with Montana’s hunting season under way. Earlier replacement of these structures was postponed in part due to the unavailability of heavy-lift helicopters during the recent extreme fire season.

With the onset of early snow and cold weather, it is important to have the replacement work completed by December 1. NorthWestern apologizes for any inconvenience this project may cause.
