South Dakota State University and NorthWestern Energy team up to provide education to students

Date: Nov 22, 2024

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Nov. 22, 2024— At South Dakota State University, engineering students have an opportunity to learn about renewable energy systems, alternative energy sources and energy consumption. Through a partnership with NorthWestern Energy, students are able to visualize practical applications of what they learn in class.

“This partnership with SDSU is important to inform the next generation of professionals on what technology we utilize and why,” said Zach Erickson, NorthWestern Energy Business Development Engineer. “It’s fun to present to the students and help them see how the things they’re learning in class have practical, positive implications in our field.”

On Tuesday afternoon, NorthWestern Energy engineers visited the Renewable Energy Systems course to educate students about the energy company’s new Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) station at a facility in Brookings.

After a brief presentation, students received a tour of the RNG station at the Brookings facility. They then participated in a Q&A about the engineering, construction and operation of the station as well as the relationship NorthWestern Energy has with the RNG producers and market.

Renewable natural gas processes captured methane from cattle manure or biomass into a pipeline-grade natural gas.
