Our Projects

We understand that our customers' needs are constantly changing and the energy industry is constantly evolving. We are working on several major projects that will help us continue to serve safe and reliable energy well into the future.

We continue to focus on investments to address aging infrastructure, enhance reliability of our system, add capacity, and meet compliance requirements. In 2023, NorthWestern Energy put approximately $562 million into capital investments in the system that serves our customers.

Investing in Montana's Energy Future

We're investing in Montana's energy future through LED streetlights, a new generating station, upgraded meters, and substation rebuilds. We're committed to improving service reliability and keeping up with community growth.

Montana Meter Upgrade

NorthWestern Energy will install 590,000 new electric meters and gas modules in Montana, which will help improve service reliability.

Gridware Pilot Program

Gridware allows us to continuously monitor our assets, so we will be able to detect and mitigate issues before they manifest into an outage. This improves reliability for our customers while also reducing wildfire risk.

Yellowstone County Generating Station

Yellowstone County Generating Station provides on‑demand resources to support the variability of wind and solar projects coming onto our system and helps serve our customers during extended periods of peak demand.

Black Eagle Dam Spillway Project

NorthWestern Energy is launching a major project to upgrade the spillway of Black Eagle Dam on the Missouri River, enhancing the safety and reliability of the hydroelectric facility.
