Celebrating Our Centennial
In 2023, we are celebrating the centennial of Northwestern Public Service, the company that transformed into NorthWestern Energy. In 1923, two utilities in Nebraska and two in South Dakota merged to form the Northwestern Public Service Company. Northwestern Public Service grew alongside the communities it served, electrifying the prairies of South Dakota and providing natural gas to homes and businesses in both South Dakota and Nebraska.

HISTORY AT A GLANCE
1923
Northwestern Public Service was founded when two electric companies in Nebraska and two in South Dakota, with roots dating back to 1909, were merged to form Northwestern Public Service Company.
1998
we re-branded as NorthWestern Corporation (doing business as NorthWestern Energy)
2002
NorthWestern Corporation purchased the Montana Power Company’s transmission and distribution system forming NorthWestern Energy
