NorthWestern Energy prepared for Montana’s extreme cold

Date: Dec 20, 2022

TYPE: News

Butte, Mont. – Dec. 20, 2022 – Temperatures across Montana will reach extreme sub-zero levels with dangerous wind-chill factors this week, according to the National Weather Service. The coldest temperatures are forecast for the mornings of Wednesday, Dec. 21, and Thursday, Dec. 22.

Montanans are relying on NorthWestern Energy to keep their homes and businesses operating safely.

“NorthWestern Energy’s Montana customers’ demand for energy, both gas and electric, is expected to be at or near all-time peaks during the next few days as Montana and the region are impacted by arctic air,” said NorthWestern Energy Vice President Transmission Mike Cashell. “We prepare for peak situations all year long to be able to reliably deliver natural gas and electricity to our customers when they need it the most. While we expect our systems to perform to these peak levels, we want our customers to be aware of the extreme conditions and to be prepared if they experience an outage. Our crews are prepared to respond immediately to any outages.”

NorthWestern Energy’s natural gas-fired generation facilities and the Colstrip power plant –available in all weather conditions − along with our hydro generation, are providing energy to keep the lights on for Montana customers this week. Until wind generation picks back up, which is forecast to occur later this week, energy from the market is being purchased to fill in the gap.
