New EPA rules for the power industry put reliable, affordable energy at risk

Date: Apr 25, 2024

Sioux Falls, S.D./Butte, Mont. – April 25, 2024 – The new Environmental Protection Agency rules for the power industry put reliable, affordable energy at risk, including for NorthWestern Energy’s customers.

“On-demand generation from natural gas and coal plants is critical for reliable and affordable power in all weather conditions,” said NorthWestern Energy President & CEO Brian Bird. “The EPA’s decisions include timelines and unproven technology that will increase the cost of energy service and jeopardize reliability.”

The EPA Mercury and Air Toxics Standards requirements will impact Montana’s Colstrip Plant.

“Colstrip keeps the lights on for our Montana customers in all weather conditions with generation that is affordable,” said NorthWestern Energy President & CEO Brian Bird. “The Colstrip Plant is well maintained and contributes very significantly to our ability to provide reliable and affordable power for our Montana customers. The inability to utilize Colstrip in the time frames contemplated by these rules will likely push our already stressed transmission system beyond its capability to import enough power to serve customers during critical periods. The reality is there may not be supply available to import for our Montana customers during critical times. Other companies in the region rely on Colstrip for their customers. The EPA’s decision puts reliable energy service at the most affordable rates at risk for our Montana customers, as well as the entire region.”

NorthWestern Energy is exploring options to challenge these EPA rules.
