Increase natural gas capacity

NorthWestern Energy installed an 8-inch natural gas pipeline near the Madison Street Bridge in Missoula using a Horizontal Directional Drill (Bore) construction method.

This NorthWestern Energy infrastructure project will increase natural gas capacity in the area and replace an existing natural gas pipeline under the Clark Fork River.

Final clean up and revegetation work at the site will take place this spring.

A depth/hydrologic study by a registered professional engineer was completed as part of the permitting process. This study determines the depth required for the pipeline under the riverbed. NorthWestern Energy is boring the pipeline at a depth far exceeding the permitting requirements to ensure safety and environmental compliance.

As with all natural gas pipelines, this is a non-liquid carrying pipeline.
