Bob Glanzer Generating Station

The 58-megawatt Bob Glanzer Generating Station in Huron, South Dakota, provides on‑demand resources to support the variability of wind and solar projects coming onto our system and help serve our customers during extended periods of peak demand.

A step toward Net Zero emissions

We have a diverse generation fleet of hydro, wind, natural gas and coal resources, each with a role in serving our customers. We are committed to Net Zero emission by 2050, and the Bob Glanzer Generating Station is an important asset in meeting that goal. Until longer-duration carbon-free resources are developed and cost effective, we need always-available natural gas fired generation to support the variability of wind and solar generation.

Stakeholder feedback

An important aspect of the process of building this plant included ongoing dialogue and sharing information with a wide variety of stakeholders, including consumer, environmental, conservation and community groups.

Honoring the legacy of Bob Glanzer

The new natural gas plant near Huron S.D. is named in honor of the late South Dakota State Rep. Bob Glanzer.

Bob was a high school teacher and coach before becoming the manager of the South Dakota State Fair in 1975. He went on to a successful banking career, retiring in 2012.

In 2016 Glanzer was elected to the South Dakota House, a public service seat he held at the time of his death on April 3, 2020 at 74 from COVID-19 complications. Sen. Glanzer worked quietly in the background for community and economic development in the Huron-area, but was willing to accelerate his efforts and visibility when needed.

Our Balanced and Diverse Energy Mix

Our Balanced and Diverse Energy Mix

At NorthWestern Energy, our goal is to provide our customers reliable energy at the lowest long-term cost. We do this through a balanced mix of safe, reliable, affordable and clean energy. Our electric portfolio is built on the carbon-free hydro system, along with wind, coal, gas and solar.

Over time, the natural gas plants and other thermal generation on our system will be used less as new cleaner, cost‑effective resources are available.
