Flood Safety

If your area is at risk of flooding, or you are returning to an impacted location, here are some important safety tips you should know:

  • If you have time, unplug appliances before evacuating. If water is already entering or present, avoid basements and areas where water and electricity might mix,
  • Watch and report any downed or sagging power lines, broken poles or exposed gas pipes - look for steel or plastic pipes floating in waterways.
  • Assume all downed power lines are energized. Stay at least 30 feet away and warn others in the area to do the same.
  • Don't worry about shutting off your gas. We'll do that if necessary.
  • Once it is safe to return, our crews will visit homes where gas was shut off to restore service to the meter.

Our crews are restoring natural gas service where it is available and safe to do so for customers impacted by flooding.

Customers need to be at their property when NorthWestern Energy personnel turn service on. Our crews are restoring natural gas service where it is available and safe to do so for customers impacted by flooding.

Property owners with appliances, such as water heaters, stoves and furnaces, that may have been submerged or damaged by flood waters, should contact a heating and appliance services professional to do an inspection or isolate damaged appliances.
