Be prepared for prolonged, extreme cold
At NorthWestern Energy, extensive planning begins anytime the forecast calls for extreme weather. NorthWestern Energy’s crews and equipment are positioned to quickly respond to any issues.
While we prepare our systems year-round to meet peak energy demands in extreme conditions, system outages affecting customers can occur. We always want our customers to be prepared too. Time spent planning and preparing before a storm will help keep you and your family safe when severe weather hits and if you do experience an outage.
Here are some steps to take before cold weather hits:
- Prepare an alternate heat source. Stock up on wood or pellets for a stove, or make sure you have kerosene for a heater.
- If you don't have an alternate heat source, make a plan to go to an alternate location.
- Be sure you have ready-to-eat food on hand that doesn't require cooking or heating.
- Charge your devices.
- Stock up on water.
If a heavy snow, wind or an ice storm is in the forecast, the time to prepare is before the storm hits.
- Ensure all your electronic/mobile devices are fully charged.
- Charge portable charging devices, such as battery banks.
- If you have an emergency power source, such as a generator, learn how to use it properly.
- If you depend on well water, fill jugs and other containers for an emergency supply.
- Prepare an emergency outage kit.
- Have a portable radio, TV or NOAA Weather Radio on hand to monitor important information.
- Visit our outage map for the latest outage information.

Generator Safety
Generator Safety
Portable generators can be useful during a power outage. However, it’s crucial that they are used safely.
Keep gas meters clear of snow
After a storm, it's important to make sure your natural gas meter is clear of snow and ice so the flow of natural gas into the home can be regulated properly. Also, be sure to shovel a path to your meter.
Prepare for a power outage before the storm hits by creating an emergency outage kit.
Emergency Resources
